California’s state parks offer incredible outdoor experiences, and for many visitors, that means bringing their dogs along for the adventure. Whether you’re hiking, camping, or simply exploring, it’s important to know the rules to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit for both you and your pet.

This guide provides everything you need to know about visiting California state parks with your dog, including leash laws, trail access, and park-specific restrictions.

General Rules for Dogs in California State Parks

California State Parks welcome dogs, but to protect wildlife, natural resources, and the experience of all visitors, there are some key rules to follow:

  • Leashes Required: Dogs must be on a leash no longer than six feet at all times.
  • Supervision: Dogs cannot be left unattended. If camping overnight, they must stay inside a tent or vehicle.
  • Restricted Areas: Dogs are not allowed inside park buildings, undeveloped areas, or trails unless specifically designated as open to leashed dogs. Generally, dogs are not permitted on trails, near rivers or creeks, in open forests, or in environmental campsites.
  • Beach Access: Most state beaches do not allow dogs. Check the park-specific information below for details.
  • Clean Up After Your Dog: Owners are responsible for cleaning up and properly disposing of pet waste.
  • No Aggressive or Loud Dogs: Vicious or excessively noisy dogs may be asked to leave.
  • Service Animal Regulations: Only properly trained service animals are permitted in restricted areas. Misrepresenting a pet as a service animal is a misdemeanor under California law (Penal Code 365.7).

For additional details on licensing and vaccination requirements, visit the California Public Resources Code 5008.1 and California Health & Safety Code 121690.

Tips for a Great Visit With Your Dog

  • Check Before You Go: Always call ahead or visit the park’s website to confirm dog policies. Rules may vary based on conditions or special wildlife protection measures.
  • Bring Essentials: Pack plenty of water, a leash, dog waste bags, and any required vaccination records.
  • Respect Nature: Avoid disturbing wildlife, and keep your dog on designated trails where allowed.

California’s state parks provide incredible opportunities for adventure, and with a little preparation, you and your dog can have an unforgettable experience.
