California Today's newsroom is driven by a shared commitment to clarity, accuracy and transparency. We believe journalism should cite its sources and empower readers to verify facts for themselves.
Mac Douglass | Editor in Chief
Mac Douglass leads California Today with the same curiosity that drew him to journalism—an impulse to see things up close. He edits, reports, and often files stories himself. Our ongoing travel series, #BeyondCaliforniaToday, is Mac's passion project, in search of the world's most unforgettable destinations beyond the Golden State.
More about Mac
A native of Mill Valley in Northern California, Mac earned his undergraduate degree in literature from the University of San Francisco and later attended the creative writing master’s program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Before turning to journalism, he spent several years teaching English and working in academic administration New York City, experiences that shaped his interest in how institutions—whether schools, governments, or media—function in people’s lives.
Mac’s reporting background includes work in sports compliance and the legal side of betting regulation, which honed his attention to detail and his skepticism toward easy narratives. At California Today, he brings that same precision to coverage that connects environmental science, public policy, and everyday experience. His leadership is defined by curiosity, structure, and a belief that good reporting is, above all else, accountable to its readers.
