U.S. Highway 50 construction update: Where to expect delays through February
Stay updated on U.S. Highway 50 construction in Sacramento, with lane closures and detours scheduled through February 2025.

The U.S. Highway 50 Multimodal Corridor Enhancement and Rehabilitation Project, a.k.a. "Fix50", continues into 2025, with ongoing construction bringing lane closures and detours throughout February.

The $386.9 million project, aimed at improving traffic flow, reducing maintenance needs, and enhancing mobility, remains on schedule for completion in July 2026.

What This Means for Drivers
Traffic congestion is expected, especially during peak hours. Drivers should plan alternate routes or allow for extra travel time. The California Highway Patrol will monitor work zones to enforce traffic safety and speed limits.
For commuters, Caltrans recommends using real-time traffic maps and signing up for alerts:

Current Project Status
The project, which spans from the U.S. 50/I-5 Interchange to the U.S. 50/Watt Avenue Interchange, involves the construction of High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes, pavement rehabilitation, and improvements to pedestrian and bicycle access.
The original concrete pavement, built between 1967 and 1971, has deteriorated significantly, requiring this large-scale infrastructure overhaul.
Key objectives of the project include:
- Reducing congestion and travel times
- Enhancing ride-sharing incentives
- Improving freight mobility with increased vertical clearance at seven overpasses
- Upgrading lighting, drainage, and pedestrian facilities
Looking Ahead
With completion targeted for July 2026, the project aims to enhance traffic flow and safety across one of Sacramento’s busiest corridors. Although disruptions will continue, the long-term benefits—including improved HOV connectivity, better freight mobility, and modernized roadway infrastructure—will significantly enhance the region’s transportation network.
