The Mist Trail report: Videos, waterfalls, and trail conditions in mid May
On May 12th, 2026, we visited Yosemite's Mist Trail and gathered videos and photographs to document its status.
In the company of distinguished California Exploration Specialist Brian Douglass, I hiked Yosemite's Mist Trail on May 12th, 2026.
We gathered videos and photographs to document the region's current status.
The Mist Trail to Vernal Fall
The Mist Trail begins at Happy Isles (shuttle stop #16) and is rated as strenuous. The hike to the top of Vernal Fall is a three-mile round trip with 1,000 feet of elevation gain.
Conditions at Vernal Fall
As of mid-May, water levels are high, resulting in heavy spray along the lower portion of the trail.
The Trail to the Top of Vernal Fall
The route to the top of Vernal Fall requires climbing a steep granite staircase of more than 600 steps. The mist here is substantial, and hikers can expect to see clear rainbows in the spray when the sun is out.
Nevada Fall and Access Limits
Continuing to the upper waterfall, Nevada Fall, extends the round trip to seven miles and requires 1,900 feet of elevation gain. Those walking from Curry Village rather than using the shuttle will add 1.5 miles to their total distance. Expect the hike to take anywhere from two to eight hours depending on the final turnaround point.
While the route to Vernal Fall is fully open, some upper trail sections around Nevada Fall are currently closed for winter damage repairs.
Gear and Safety
The force of the falling water creates a strong, localized wind that significantly drops the temperature. Even on warm days reaching 85 degrees, the mist zone is cold. A light rain jacket is highly recommended for this section of the hike. Once past the immediate spray, hikers will dry off rapidly in the sun.
Because the trail is continually wet from the waterfall, the granite steps are very slick. Proper footwear with strong traction is a necessity, and trekking poles are useful for maintaining balance on the wet incline.
